Cougars in finals of tourney

The Saint Francis women just keep on winning at the start of the season, even when the Cougars have to claw their way to victory.

Saint Francis advanced to the finals of the Saint Xavier Holiday Tournament championship with a 63-54 comeback win over Saint Francis (Ill.) in Chicago.

Saint Francis will play No. 12 Saint Xavier (11-3), a 77-61 winner over No. 23 Huntington on Friday, in the tournament’s title game at 7 p.m. today.

The No. 7 Cougars, who improved to a school record 14-0 to start the season, trailed the Saints 46-40 with nine minutes to play.

Saint Francis outscored its Illinois counterpart 23-8 the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Skylarr Shurn scored 18 for the Cougars, and Jenelle Wilson and Meghan Slusher added 12 and 10.

Katie Gonnering scored 23 and had 11 rebounds for the Saints (7-8).

IUPUI 79, IPFW 74: The Mastodons couldn’t hold on to a seven-point halftime lead at home against the Jaguars in the Summit League opener for both teams.

Amanda Hyde scored 30 points for IPFW (4-9, 0-1) before fouling out, and Erin Murphy scored 17.

Katie Comello led IUPUI (7-6, 1-0) with 29 points. Former Snider standout Akilah Sims had two points and four rebounds as she made her sixth start of the season.

SAINT XAVIER 77, HUNTINGTON 61: Pazia Speed’s game-high 23 points were not enough for the Foresters (9-4) in the Saint Xavier Holiday Tournament.

Sarah Miller-Jennings scored 13 for Huntington.

Huntington will play Saint Francis (Ill.) in the tournament’s third-place game at 5 p.m. today.

INDIANA TECH 108, ST. MARY OF THE WOODS 89: Rachel Kruse scored 23 points, and Ulyssia Richmond added 21 for the Warriors (4-10) at home.

Chelsea Carradine scored 15, and Kaneisha Bass added 12 for Tech.

Men

TRINE 63, PENN ST. BEHREND 55: In Westerville, Ohio, Nick Tatu came off the bench to score 15, and reserve Tarvis Malone added 12 points for the Thunder (7-2).

Jared Homquist was Trine’s only starter to score in double figures with 11.

Russ Conley scored 14 for Behrend (5-4).
