Winter storm warning

The National Weather Service says a winter storm warning will be in effect from 7 a.m. today to 1 a.m. Thursday for the Indiana counties of Adams, Allen, Blackford, DeKalb, Grant, Huntington, Jay and Wells.

A strong low pressure system over Mississippi will move northeast to Virginia tonight. Snow will expand northward through northern Indiana and northwest Ohio this morning, and overspread south central lower Michigan by late morning.

The snow will be heavy at times today, especially along and southeast of the U.S. 24 corridor before quickly diminishing in intensity tonight.

In addition to snow, northeast winds will increase up to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 35 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility.

Total snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches are expected by late tonight with locally higher amounts possible. The heaviest snow is expected to fall during the day today.

Snow and blowing snow will result in hazardous holiday travel conditions.

A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible, making travel hazardous or impossible.
