The Dish

  • Deli 620 preparing new home
Lindi Miller is, by nature, a happy person, but she’s just a little bit happier right now.
  • Area restaurants plan specials for Easter
Easter is late this year – April 20 – and still I feel like it’s sneaking up on me. I have nary an item for baskets and have yet to pin a ham recipe (or bunny cake) on my Pinterest board.
  • Duty’s space to become Scotty’s
After three years and two other possible locations, Scott Wise has inked a deal to bring Scotty’s Brewhouse to Fort Wayne. The restaurant will move into 6282 W. Jefferson Blvd.

Mexican-style bakery among new options

At least two food stores have opened recently in northeast Indiana, and another is on the way.

•Castillo Panderia Bakery (207 S. Cavin St., Ligonier) opened last week. The bakery specializes in Mexican-style breads and pastries, owner Alejandro Herrera says. It also offers cupcakes and cookies, and will eventually offer cakes.

•Mariachi Loco Mexican Grill (1241 N. 13th St., Decatur) opened Nov. 1. The four-page menu is a mixture of Tex Mex and traditional Mexican food, says Hugo Sanchez, one of Mariachi Loco’s owners. So far, the restaurant’s fajitas and nachos have been some of its best-sellers.

•In Fort Wayne, at least one restaurant will open shortly. Blue Stack Smokehouse (3620 N. Clinton St.) has a “coming soon” sign in front of the building. According to the restaurant’s website, BlueStackSmokehouse.com, all entrées are slow smoked over pecan or fruit wood. “This leaves a sweet, smoked, not over-powering taste in your mouth,” it says.

Meats include chicken, ribs, brisket, pork and sausage, served with or without sides.

Name change

Friends Too, at 3720 W. Jefferson Blvd., has changed its name to Nikos Friends Too. Co-owner Nikos Hatzigeorgiou says customers have told him to add his name to the restaurant because they didn’t think “Friends Too” properly indicated that the restaurant had Greek cuisine.

“A lot of customers said they like it,” Hatzigeorgiou says of the change.

The new sign was put up last week. There isn’t a sign yet at the restaurant’s second location, Friends (1824 Dupont Road), but its name will change to Nikos Friends.

Nomination

Jim Casaburo, the owner of the Casa Restaurant Group, has been nominated for the 2012 Spirit Award for the Children’s Oncology Camping Association International because of his contributions to Camp Watcha Wanna Do Ltd. The camp serves children and families affected by childhood cancers in northern Indiana.

Casaburo has volunteered at the camp for a decade, according to a news release, playing with the children and supplying equipment and deliveries for meals. He is also vice president of the camp’s board of directors.

To celebrate Casa’s 35th anniversary this year, Casa customers redeemed $5 coupons, and the restaurant group donated $1 from each coupon redeemed, raising $2,000 for the camp.
