Firefighters fight blaze in West Central

Firefighters are responding to a fire in a three-story apartment complex on West Wayne Street.

Fire crews responded to a call about 11:52 a.m. coming from the 1100 block of West Wayne Street, said Stacey Fleming, a Fort Wayne Fire Department spokeswoman.

As of 1:45 p.m., Fleming said crews remained on the scene, and the fire had not yet been under control. She said there were no injuries, but several pets, including two cats, were reported missing.

The apartment has five units -- three of which were occupied at the time the fire began, Fleming said.

"People from all three units self-evacuated," she said.

Fleming did not know how many people had evacuated the building.

West Wayne Street remains closed at this time, she said.
