  • Gov. Pence's homework assignment
It's easy to see why Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is so eager to embrace the pro-privatization forces working to dismantle public education. They spend lots of money, after all, electing politicians to support their mission.

Another loss for Tony Bennett

State Superintendent Tony Bennett has suffered yet another loss, this one in his attempt to steer millions in tax dollars away from Indianapolis Public Schools. A Marion Superior Court Judge Patrick McCarty has ruled that the Indiana State Board of Education overpaid the turnaround operators hired to run four IPS schools.

This is a significant decision in favor of children and giving them the financial support they deserve under state law," IPS Superintendent Eugene White said. "We have been honest and realistic in advocating for our children and are pleased with the court's action. We encourage the state board to act quickly in restoring the appropriate funding.

The state wrongly used last year's enrollment figures to award funds to the turnaround operators. When enrollment at the schools dropped significantly as parents chose other schools, the funding was not adjusted.

Apparently, "the money follows the child" doesn't apply if the state wants the money to go somewhere else.

A sound ruling, all the way around.
