Coach Al Sims and captain Colin Chaulk retired, and now so has the goaltender who backstopped them to four championships between 2008 and 2012.The Komets scored three goals in the third period to defeat Kalamazoo 5-3 Friday at Wings Stadium.
Kenny Reiter made 16 saves as Fort Wayne improved to 14-11-2.
Eric Giosa scored with 10:41 to go in the third period to give the Komets a 3-2 lead. Ryan Lasch made it 4-2 with a goal at 15:03. Thomas Beauregard extended the lead to 5-2 with a goal at 18:15.
All of the scoring came in the final two periods. The Komets had 10 of the first 12 shots, but it was scoreless after the first period.
Josh Brittain and Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock scored goals for the Komets in the second period to make it 2-0. Kalamazoo responded with goals by Kory Karlander and Eric Kattelus later in the period to tie it at 2.
Giosa’s goal, his fourth of the season, broke the tie. The Komets out-shot the Wings 29-19.
The Komets improved to 5-3-1 against Kalamazoo (11-13-3).
Fort Wayne returns to action today at Memorial Coliseum against Trenton. Newly acquired defenseman Tim Priamo is expected to make his debut for the Komets.
