Ex-tutor recognizes suspect in thefts

A Fort Wayne man faces charges of theft, counterfeiting and corrupt business influence after his former math tutor recognized him and turned him in, court papers said.

Akei Jacobs, 23, and an unknown woman used four counterfeit $100 bills over a three-day period from Sept. 7 to Sept. 9 while paying for items at a Fort Wayne Walmart. Jacobs and the woman visited the same two cashiers each time and all four $100 bills had the same serial number, court records said.

One cashier noticed the third bill was counterfeit and took it to management. When Jacobs returned Oct. 2 with a fifth counterfeit bill, a store employee recognized him and said she used to tutor him in math, court documents said.

Jacobs was charged Wednesday but had not been arrested.
