Former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke's next career will be as a college professor.

Indiana University announced Tuesday that Helmke in January will join the faculty at its School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Bloomington.

He will teach and also direct the Civic Leaders Living-Learning Center, a residence-hall program that will open next fall for first-year students interested in government, public policy, politics and economics.

"SPEA's research, its faculty and its alumni are held in very high regard. Now to become a direct part of SPEA and contribute to its positive impact on the nation and the world is an honor indeed," Helmke said in a statement.

Helmke, a Republican, was mayor for three terms from 1988 through 1999 and president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 1997-98.

The North Side High School graduate is an IU graduate and was president of its student government in 1969-70. He earned a degree in political science at IU and a law degree from Yale University, graduating in 1973 in the same class as Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Helmke was president of the Brady Campaign and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence from 2006 until July 2011.
