Butkus coming to town; notes

Bishop Luers senior linebacker Jaylon Smith will officially receive the Butkus Award during a convocation at 2 p.m. Saturday in the school's gymnasium.

The award's namesake, NFL legend Dick Butkus, will be on hand to present the award to Smith as the top high school linebacker.

Butkus' son, Matt, will also attend the ceremony.

Smith got the news of receiving the 2012 award during a teleconference with Butkus last week.

Smith, a Notre Dame recruit, led the Knights to four straight Class 2A state championship in November.

The outside linebacker had 75 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and eight sacks, while also rushing for 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns at running back.

Lakewood Park senior to sign

Lakewood Park senior boys basketball player Jake Neely will sign a letter of intent Friday to Judson University in Elgin, Illinois.

North Side fb team visiting Lutheran

Members of the North Side football team will be visiting Lutheran Hospital at 4 p.m. Dec. 21. Players will be delivering gifts and reading Christmas stories to children.
