Free throws lift Red Claws over Ants

The Maine Red Claws used their free-throw shooting down the stretch – they made eight of their last 10 – to defeat the Mad Ants 116-113 at the Portland Expo Building in front of 2,275 on Saturday night.

Maine (4-2) was led by 26 points from Shelvin Mack, one of six players in double figures for the Red Claws.

Mack is a former star at Butler who was a second-round pick of the NBA’s Washington Wizards in 2011.

Chris Wright added 21 points for the victors.

Fort Wayne (2-5) was paced by Walker Russell’s 29 points. He made 11 of 17 shots, including 3 of 7 from three-point range. Teammate Ron Howard had 27 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Howard made all 11 of his free-throw attempts.

Maine won both meetings between the teams this season.

Tony Mitchell had 18 points for the Mad Ants, who also got 18 from Sadiel Rojas.

Both teams shot well. Maine was 50 percent from the field and Fort Wayne 44 percent.

Maine did better from three-point range. The Red Claws were 4 of 14 and the Mad Ants were 3 of 16.

Kris Joseph of Maine had 18 points and Micah Downs had 17. DaJuan Summers, who had a game-best 11 rebounds, added 12 points.

The teams meet again Friday in Fort Wayne, the first of five more meetings this D-League season.
