Third-quarter slump sends Ants to defeat

– A poor third quarter did in the Mad Ants in a 108-100 loss Friday at Springfield, Mass.

Ron Howard had 22 points and seven rebounds for the Mad Ants, who were outscored 31-13 in the quarter.

Mike Anderson added 15 points and 12 rebounds as Fort Wayne lost its second straight.

The Mad Ants started strong, leading 33-27 after the first quarter and 60-49 at halftime.

But the team couldn’t recover from the third-quarter struggles. Fort Wayne (2-4) shot 39.2 percent from the floor for the game.

JaJuan Johnson had 18 points while Walker Russell finished with 16 for the Mad Ants. Darryl Partin was the fifth Fort Wayne player to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 10 points.

Johnson and Tony Mitchell had eight rebounds. Russell had eight assists.

Springfield (3-1) had six players reach double figures in scoring. Carleton Scott led the way with 22 points. He also had 11 rebounds.

Ben Uzoh also recorded a double-double for the Armor, scoring 18 points and collecting 11 rebounds. He also had six assists.

James Mays (16 points), Shawn Taggart (15), Willie Reed (12) and Shawn Vanzant also scored in double figures for Springfield.

Springfield shot 41.9 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Mad Ants 63-55.

The Mad Ants are at Maine at 7 p.m. today.
