IPFW at Drake

When: 8 p.m. today

Where: Des Moines, Iowa

Records: IPFW 5-5, Drake 3-4

Radio: 1380 AM

IPFW leaders: Frank Gaines (19.2 ppg), Mario Hines (6.2 rpg), Pierre Bland (2.3 apg)

Drake leaders: Ben Simons (15.6 ppg), Jordan Clarke (9.6 rpg), Richard Carter (3.9 apg)

Key matchup: Drake could be one of the bigger teams the Mastodons will face this season. The Bulldogs’ leading scorer and rebounder are each 6-foot-8, and Clarke checks in at 256 pounds. Backup center Seth VanDeest averages 10.7 points and is 6-11, 269. Joey King, at 6-9, will also likely see action. And Drake has 6-10 freshman Robert Puleikis on the bench, if not for show.

The skinny: IPFW needs to put its loss at Valparaiso in the rearview mirror. The Mastodons stayed in the game with the help of the 14 first-half points of Gaines, but he went 0 for 5 from the floor in the second half and the team made just 4 of 20 shots. … Drake dropped its last game, 88-73, to Saint Mary’s. But one of its losses was a close one to Xavier, 74-70.
