Fire at Indy apartment building kills 7-year-old

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A 7-year-old boy has died in a fire at an Indianapolis apartment building that forced several residents to leap out of second-story windows.

Fire Department officials didn't immediately release the name of the boy who was killed early Saturday morning in the fire on the city's west side.

The boy's mother says she tried to take her son with her as she jumped from the second floor, but lost her grip on him in the heat and smoke.

Officials say the fire forced 15 people out of their homes, including four who jumped.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within a half-hour.

Five residents and one firefighter were injured.

Officials say there were no working smoke detectors in the building. Damage was estimated at $150,000.
