Snider's Leander Williams and Josh Spitnale got the last laugh Friday against North Side.

Williams, a transfer from North Side this year, faced taunts of "traitor" all game long from the Redskins' faithful. But the diminutive guard made 5 of 6 free throws, including 2 of 2 in the final seconds, as the Panthers held on for a 75-71 win in their season and SAC opener.

Williams finished with seven points, four rebounds and two assists.

"It was the first game and everybody had the jitters, and it was a big game for (Williams) because it was the old school he was playing," said senior Stephen Halstead, who led Snider with 18 points.

Spitnale lost his cool a bit in the fourth quarter, picking up a personal foul and a technical on the same play as North Side took advantage in what turned out to be a seven-point possession and a 55-52 lead.

"Right after it happened, I went to (Spitnale) on the bench and told him 'we are going to pull this one out for you,' " Halstead said. "Thankful we did. He apologized in the locker room, and he will be ready to go tonight (at East Noble)."

The Panthers prevailed, though, by outscoring the Redskins 14-4 down the stretch.
