Lugar to announce plans for the future

Lugar

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., will announce Friday what he plans to do after leaving office this year, and it apparently involves the University of Indianapolis.

The six-term senator and university President Robert Manuel will have a 3:30 p.m. news conference at Esch Hall, according to the school and Lugar’s staff.

The news organization Politico reported last week that Lugar was in talks with the University of Indianapolis and Indiana University about teaching jobs.

The University of Indianapolis is a private school with a home-campus enrollment of 5,200 students. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

Lugar, 80, was on the school’s board of trustees for 32 years and taught political science at the school in 1976, after his last term as Indianapolis mayor and before his election to the Senate, according to the university.

In 1977, Lugar selected the University of Indianapolis to host the annual Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders for Indiana’s top high school juniors. The 36th symposium will be Saturday, and Lugar will give the keynote address.

Lugar lost the Republican primary election to state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who was defeated in the general election by Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-2nd.
