Inaugural festivities debut on weekend

Swearing-in set Jan. 14

Pence

– Gov.-elect Mike Pence will host three days of events in January surrounding his inauguration as Indiana’s 50th governor.

“We want every Hoosier to have an opportunity to take part in the upcoming inaugural events,” said incoming first lady Karen Pence. “With free activities from our Family Fun Day to the Inauguration Ceremony, we want this inaugural weekend to have something for everyone from every corner of the state. Mike and I look forward to joining Hoosiers at each event to mark this special occasion in the life of our state.”

The activities kick off Jan. 12 with a Family Fun Day at the Dallara IndyCar Factory in Speedway at 11 a.m. It is free and open to the public.

Then there is the traditional black-tie optional inaugural ball dinner and dance that night at 7 p.m. at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis. The cost is $150 a couple.

On Jan. 13, a free and open praise and worship service will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University.

The premiere event is Pence’s inaugural ceremony Jan. 14 at the Indiana Statehouse at 11 a.m.

Eight years ago, Mitch Daniels was sworn in as governor before 8,000 people at the Coliseum on the Indiana State Fairgrounds. In 2009, he took the oath before 1,000 people at the Statehouse.

Pence featured the Coliseum in his first television ad, adding that he and Karen went ice skating on their first date. But it is closed for repairs right now.

Registration is required for all three events, and will open in mid-December.

At all inaugural events, staff will be accepting donations to the Midwest Food Bank. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to any of the events.
