The body of Thomas Haskins was a day away from being cremated – and his closest kin didn’t even know he was dead.A dozen catalytic converters were stolen from rental trucks on a U-Haul lot east of downtown, a Fort Wayne police report said.
The theft to the business at 808 E. Washington Blvd. occurred sometime overnight and was reported to police Friday.
There was no surveillance video available, and police have no suspects, the report stated.
Catalytic converters are pollution control devices found underneath vehicles. The filters inside converters contain small amounts of valuable metals, including platinum, rhodium and palladium, which can be sold at scrapyards.
It typically costs $1,500 to $2,200 to repair a vehicle after its catalytic converter has been stolen, a local mechanic said.
