Notre Dame or Alabama will get the upper hand in national football championships when the No. 1 Irish (12-0) play the No. 2 Crimson Tide (12-1) in the BCS championship game Jan. 7 in Miami.
The teams each have eight Associated Press national titles between them.
Notre Dames last championship came in 1988, and this will be the first time the Irish have played in a BCS championship game.
Alabama won its second title in three years by winning last years championship game against LSU.
Notre Dame and Alabama have played six times before, with the Irish holding a 5-1 edge in the series.
