  • Petition seeks curb to fireworks use
The Independence Day celebration of bombs bursting in air and gunshots has gotten out of hand and needs to be reined in.
  • Living through July 4 unnerving experience
What I experienced on the Fourth of July was a war, not a celebration, as huge rocket launchers hurled bomb-sounding fireworks in the air and the fire landing on other homeowner's yards and houses.
  • Police, firefighter must choose own union heads
Maybe if we changed the title of the union presidents to “CEO of police and fire,” the Republican City Council would allow them to be compensated for there service.

General Assembly promotes divisiveness

I am sure that many readers have no idea the Indiana General Assembly proposes an amendment to the state constitution to limit marriage to one man and one woman. Further, this amendment would prohibit civil unions for all people.

Why would lawmakers take such a radical step when the majority of Hoosiers believe that marriage for same-gender couples should be legal? Why wouldn’t this be good for such people’s mental health and the health of their children? Why shouldn’t they have the same opportunities to be in a lifelong, loving relationship that is supportive and protected by the law?

My hope is for same-gender couples to have the same rights my husband and I have to inherit property, to share in health care, to help make end-of-life decisions with one’s spouse and to protect shared children.

It is time for us to learn to live together and support one another instead of making more rules that separate us.

Holiday encroachment increasing by the year

Retail merchants should consider this for next year and the following years.

Thanksgiving should be a true holiday in which all should be able to celebrate with friends and family. Our retailers should not be so greedy as to require their employees to give up their time and not be able to be with family on a day we set aside to give thanks for all of the bounty we have been given.

Each year we continue to infringe on the celebration of Thanksgiving by starting “Black Friday” earlier and earlier. It appears that our merchants and retailers feel they must get a head start on their competition by opening their doors on what used to be a family holiday.

I commend J.C. Penney for keeping its store closed for the holiday, even though the company is facing possible bankruptcy and financial woes; we need to support them in this endeavor. We as customers should only support retailers that are willing to keep Thanksgiving as a truly family holiday and remain closed until Friday.

Christmas does not begin until after Thanksgiving!

Any higher tax is a bad tax

I’m extremely troubled by some members of the Republican Party recently saying that they will not honor their promise not to raise taxes on the American people.

Much has been made about the “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” advocated by Grover Norquist. When a candidate for public office signs that pledge, they are making a promise to their constituents – not to any one person – that they will not raise their taxes.

Democrats are not even trying to hide the fact that they want to raise any tax they can. The question is only “on whom” and “by how much.”

There are certain proposals, like higher energy taxes, that would hurt our economy more than others. Raising taxes on energy companies doesn’t hurt those companies; it hurts us.

The American consumers are the ones who will have to pay for these higher taxes.

I applaud Sens. Dan Coats and Richard Lugar for their stand against higher taxes in the past and hope they continue to fight for lower taxes for us all.
