Mad Ants NBADL

  • Mad Ants affiliates up to baker’s dozen
The D-League is moving toward a system in which there’s one team for every NBA team. But not all the NBA teams are yet interested in running a D-League team or even regularly sending players down.

D-League preview: Mad Ants vs. Canton

When: 7 p.m. today

Where: Memorial Coliseum

Records: Mad Ants 0-2, Canton 0-2

Mad Ants leaders: Ron Howard (25.5 ppg), JaJuan Johnson (8.5 rpg), Walker Russell Jr. (5.0 apg)

Canton leaders: Kevin Jones (28.5 ppg), Jones (15.0 rpg), Kevin Anderson, Jorge Gutierrez (4.5 apg)

Key matchup: Without Miles Plumlee’s physical presence in the middle, the Ants became considerably thinner in the post, which is not good, considering where Canton’s strength lies. Kevin Jones is a bulky 6-foot-8, 250-pounder who takes up a lot of room. He’s coming in with impressive numbers – 28.5 points per game and 15 rebounds per game. That means JaJuan Johnson and Sean Sonderleiter, the pair of 6-10 players, will have their hands full.

The skinny: Without Plumlee and Orlando Johnson, who returned to the Pacers, the Ants will have to find someone other than Ron Howard and Walker Russell Jr. to pick up the scoring and leadership. The Ants played one preseason game, and they beat Canton 95-92. The Charge, however, have a plus-4 in the rebound average, whereas the Ants are a minus-11.5. It’s a statistic that could determine the winner.
