Officer hit by van while trying to stop suicidal driver

DAYTON, Ohio – Authorities say a southwest Ohio police officer is in stable condition after being hit by a minivan while trying to deploy a tire-deflation device to stop another vehicle.

WHIO-TV (http://bit.ly/Rhe6vC) reports that it happened at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday as the Dayton officer was laying the deflation device to try to stop a driver who was threatening to kill himself and refusing to stop for officers.

The injured officer’s name hasn’t been released.

The driver who was being pursued was taken into custody, as was the women driving the van that struck the officer. Police did not say if either has been charged.
