Tear gas used to end standoff in Whitley

Police used tear gas to end a five-hour standoff with a suicidal man who had pointed a handgun at officers in Whitley County, according to the sheriff’s department.

About 4:20 p.m. Monday, a woman reported that she received text messages from the man saying he was going to kill himself. Sheriff’s deputies went to his mobile home on County Road 700 West, south of Larwill.

The man did not answer his door, so deputies forced open a back door and were met by the man pointing a gun at them, the sheriff’s department said.

The deputies backed off and the Indiana State Police emergency response team came to the scene. The team tried to persuade the man to come outside, but he refused.

About 9:30 p.m., police shot tear gas through a window, and the man left the home. Identified as 41-year-old Jeremy Gutherie, he was taken to Parkview Whitley Hospital and then to the Whitley County Jail.

He was charged with pointing a loaded firearm. His bail was set at $100,000.
