About 3 p.m. Thursday the Rev. Bill McGill looked out of his window and pondered that it was the 37th day of his 40-day fast to draw attention to violence in the community, and there had been no civilian-on-civilian homicides in Fort Wayne.A three-vehicle crash left a moped rider dead in the middle of U.S. 24 West on Monday morning, according to the Huntington County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash occurred just after 6 a.m., according to investigators.
A Jeep driven by 62-year-old Linda K. Moore of Lagro was traveling east on U.S. 24 when a moped traveling on County Road 750 West came into her path at the intersection.
The collision sent the moped rider – who has not been identified – into the driving lane of the highway, police said.
Moore pulled the Jeep over and went to check on the moped driver, according to police.
She had just returned to her Jeep, though, when a tractor-trailer rig, driven by 52-year-old David Rose, of Fowlerville, Mich., struck the left rear of the Jeep and then struck the moped and its rider, who was still lying in the road.
The moped became entangled beneath the truck’s undercarriage, causing the truck to catch fire, police said.
The truck rig came to rest in the passing lane of U.S. 24 West, according to police.
The moped rider died at the crash scene, police said.
The series of crashes remain under investigation, police said.
