Big Confusion

Now my head really is splitting.

Rutgers and Maryland joining the Big Ten (thus making it, ahem, the Big 14, or maybe the Big We-Flunked-Remedial-Math) was bad enough. I mean, Rutgers and Maryland in the Big Ten is about as conceptually ludicrous as a penguin driving a stock car. There's no history there, no geographical or genealogical connection, no common cause at all except the common cause of mutual greed.

But now?

Now the Big East has become, well, I don't know, something else. It added Tulane and East Carolina (in football) today, in anticipation of Louisville and UConn leaving for the ACC, which needs to replace Maryland now.

This means the Big East will, as of 2014, be comprised of nine former Conference USA schools, two former Mountain West schools and a former Mid-American Conference school. It will include two schools in Florida (Central Florida and South Florida), one school in California (San Diego State), one school in Idaho (Boise State) and two schools in Texas (Houston and SMU).

But, of course, it will still be called the Big East. East of what, I have no idea. Guam, perhaps.

My head. My aching head.
