Fremont man charged in meth case

A Fremont man was arrested Tuesday in connection with what Steuben County sheriff's deputies believe was an active meth lab found at a Barton Lake home.

Corey A. Witsman, 24, was held at the county jail on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia and dealing/manufacturing methamphetamine, the county sheriff's office said in a statement. His bond was set at $50,500.

Deputies and a detective responded to the home at 40 Lane 301 A Barton Lake shortly before 3 a.m. on a call for a welfare check, the statement said.

While conducting the check, deputies saw what they thought were drugs or drug paraphernalia, it said. After obtaining a search warrant, the statement said, deputies obtained probable cause to believe that methamphetamine was being made in a detached garage.

The statement said the home's owner -- who was not Witsman -- consented to a search of the garage, and deputies said they found what they believed to be an active meth lab.

The Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab Team assisted deputies with the investigation, the statement said.
