And Another Thing

So now the question becomes: Where is Robin Webber today?

You remember him, right? Tight end? 1973 Sugar Bowl? Caught the pass out of the end zone from Tom Clements that sealed a 24-23 and the national title over No. 1 and unbeaten Alabama?

Well, come on down, buddy, and bring your pucca shells, 747-wingspan shirt collars and plaid cuffed flaired pants with you. It's '73 all over again, now that the Irish are No. 1 and 'Bama No. 2 and thisclose to playing for all the marbles again.

All Notre Dame has to do is beat sinking, wounded USC next week. All 'Bama has to do is beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl on Saturday, then beat Georgia in the SEC title game, and it is on like Donkey Kong.

And, yes, 1973 again. Or, in Notre Dame's case, 1993, too, which was the last time the Irish were ranked No. 1.

Bill Clinton was 10 months into his first term. LeBron James was 8 years old. Bob Knight was still gainfully employed by Indiana University, and NASCAR hadn't come to Indy yet.

Ain't time travel grand?
