Mad Ants waive 3 before season tuneup

A day before the Mad Ants traveled to Canton, Ohio, to play their only NBA D-League exhibition game, the team waived three players from its training camp roster.

Forwards Dominic Cheek and Lenny Daniel and guard Dante Williams were released Friday by the Ants, who visit Canton today for a 3 p.m. exhibition.

The Ants have 12 players on the roster, which must be trimmed to 10 for their season opener Friday against the Erie BayHawks.

Cheek is a 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward from Villanova, Daniel is 6-8, 215 from Cal State Northridge, and Williams is 6-foot, 185 from East Tennessee State.

The Ants have four players in camp returning from last year’s 14-36 team that finished with the worst record in the D-League.

Veteran guard Ron Howard and Walker Russell Jr. return with second-year guard Sadiel Rojas and veteran center Sean Sonderleiter.

Today’s game will be the D-League debut of former Purdue standout JaJuan Johnson.

After playing last season with the Boston Celtics and being released by Houston during the Rockets’ training camp, the 6-10 Johnson was the first overall pick in the annual D-League draft this month.

Others still on the Ants’ roster are 6-8 forward Mike Anderson (Virginia Commonwealth), 6-6 forward Bryant Austin (Indiana Tech), 6-1 guard Dariese Gary (New Mexico), 6-5 guard Darryl Partin (Boston), 6-10 forward Tommy Smith (Arizona State), 6-10 center Bernard Toombs (Troy) and 6-7 forward Jason Warren (Missouri Western).

This will be the sixth D-League season for the Ants.
