CHEERS to the Fort Wayne Housing Authority for making its residences entirely smoke-free in 2013. As a former home health care nurse making home visits in these settings, I know firsthand that there is no such thing as protection from secondhand smoke.
LINDA KERR Fort Wayne
CHEERS to the Fort Wayne Housing Authority for going smokefree in its housing units on Jan. 1, 2013. Secondhand smoke contains at least 250 known toxic chemicals, including more than 50 that can cause cancer. Secondhand smoke causes heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults and a number of health conditions, including sudden infant death syndrome and respiratory infections, in children.
PATRICIA M. TURNER Fort Wayne
CHEERS to the Civic Theatre worker who helped my husband and me relocate our seats for A Christmas Story. Because of my husband’s disability we were unable to sit in the seats we had purchased. She quickly located seats that were accessible, and we were able to enjoy a wonderful night at the theater.
KAREN MOESSNER Fort Wayne
CHEERS to Dianne Moellering and the Concordia Marching Cadets for the runner-up placing at the state marching band finals at Lucas Oil Stadium. Moellering not only inspired our children to be great band members but great Christian band members who inspired others with their performance.
MIKE and GAIL WATKINS Fort Wayne
CHEERS to the Junk Yard Band, The Knights of Columbus and all the wonderful people who volunteered their time, talents or came out in support of our fifth annual St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen Ministries fundraiser Oct. 20. With your help we were able to raise more than $14,000, of which 100 percent will be used to help the St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen Ministries.
VAL VORNDRAN and DOTTIE CARPENTER And The St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen Ministries Fundraising Committee
CHEERS to the folks at Good Shepherd Methodist Church on Reed Road in St. Joe Township. The congregation supplied coffee, juice and treats to Precincts 171 and 172 during the Nov. 6 election, making the voting experience more pleasurable.
JEERS to those who can’t separate from an umbilical cell phone regardless of the venue or occasion.
STANLEY BARKER Fort Wayne
CHEERS to Calvary Baptist Church for donating to Parkview Randallia’s Family Birthing Center. Calvary Baptist Church has been generous to donate snacks and entertainment/toys to siblings and newborn supplies to families in need. These items have been very useful and are very much appreciated.
LISA SMITH, MEGAN WINFREE, DIANE SUTTLE Parkview Randallia Family Birthing Center
CHEERS to the female FedEx driver, the young couple in the blue car, and the homeowner, all strangers who out of the goodness of their hearts helped my husband back into his motorized chair after the chair hit a hole and threw him to the ground. We had just walked home from voting. This reaffirmed my belief in humanity and showed you don’t need a disaster to bring out the good in people.
And JEERS to the woman voter in front of us who let the door shut in my husband’s face as we left the church where we vote. Even if you don’t like someone’s political stance, to be that rude to someone with a disability is just un-American.
