There were a couple of questionable calls -- the Toledo goal that was waved off; the hooking penalty on Brett Smith when the opponent stepped on a stick -- but overall the officiating by Don Jablonski was fair tonight in the Walleye's 2-1 victory over the Komets.
And it was indicative of a change Fort Wayne is going to have to get used to.
"The referees in this league, they don't care if it's 12 penalties to one. If you are taking penalties that are penalties, they are going to call them," Fort Wayne coach Al Sims said at Memorial Coliseum.
A big gripe in the CHL, IHL and UHL was that the referees didn't call things the same in the third period as they did in the first.
Referees also tried to even up the number of power plays for each team, it was alleged.
The Komets don't believe that's the case in the ECHL. And, therefore, they cannot complain like they used to.
They gave up two power-power play goals tonight -- after Daniel Maggio got a major for cross-checking and Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock was penalized for jawing at the referee -- in the Walleye's win.
"We had no discipline in the penalty department at all," said Sims, whose 7-4-1 team has followed its five-game winning streak with losses in the last two games.
The good news for the Komets is that goalie Kenny Reiter was stellar with 30 saves and that Colin Chaulk scored late.
