FORT WAYNE – An armed Fort Wayne man was arrested early Saturday after a two-hour standoff in West Central while two children in the apartment slept.
Ryan Baughman, 23, was taken into custody about 6:20 a.m., according to the Fort Wayne Police Department. Police had responded to an apartment house at 821 W. Jefferson Blvd. on a domestic violence call from a 22-year-old woman who said Baughman was threatening her with a semiautomatic handgun.
The woman called the police at 3:22 a.m. Saturday and said she and Baughman had been in a heated argument. She told police Baughman was under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs and had threatened her, police said. The woman, who had minor injuries, fled from the apartment and called police, leaving the two children – a 1-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl – inside, police said.
Officers arrived at 3:25 a.m. but were unable to contact Baughman. The Emergency Services Team – the department’s SWAT team – and the Crisis Response Team were also called.
Several officers from the Emergency Services Team used an explosive device to force open the door of the home shortly after 6 a.m. They found Baughman with a semiautomatic handgun and two loaded magazines of ammunition, police said.
The children were found sleeping in another room, uninjured, and were returned to their mother.
Baughman was arrested on a felony charge of domestic battery with children present and a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.
