Woman in wheelchair killed crossing Indiana street

SULLIVAN, Ind. (AP) — Police in western Indiana say a 71-year-old woman in a wheelchair was struck and killed while crossing a city street.

Police say Evelyn Norfleet was in a motorized wheelchair and crossing a street in an area not marked as a crosswalk near her home in downtown Sullivan when she was hit by a pickup truck Tuesday.

The Sullivan Daily Times reports the driver told police that the height of his truck and the sun's glare prevented him from seeing Norfleet. The driver told police he stopped once he realized he hit something.

Norfleet was pronounced dead soon after the accident at a hospital in the city about 25 miles south of Terre Haute. The driver was given a ticket for disregarding a pedestrian.
