GARY, Ind. – Authorities say a small plane from Smyrna, Tenn., has crashed in Gary about a mile south of Gary/Chicago International Airport.
Federal Aviation Authority spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said in a recorded statement that "the local coroner will identify the deceased."
The Times of Munster reports that the Lake County Coroner's Office confirmed it was called to the scene but had no information to release immediately.
Gary police spokesman Cpt. Gabrielle King said the scene is "chaotic" but had no other immediate details about the crash.
CBS Chicago was reporting from the scene that the plane went down on a city street and that only the pilot died. This could not be immediately confirmed with officials.
