Booze on ICE

State excise police have pledged crackdowns on college drinking before, but proof of their newest campaign is in the numbers.

Last weekend, excise police arrested 72 people on and around the campus of Notre Dame, most on alcohol-related charges. More than half were arrested during tailgating parties. At least 18 adults were charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor, while 45 minors were arrested for underage drinking.

A week earlier, excise police arrested 188 people at Indiana University in Bloomington, 110 in the tailgate parking lot.

The excise police have targeted those universities as well as Ball State, Indiana State, Purdue and Butler in their Intensified College Enforcement program.
