Watermelons linked to salmonella pulled

OWENSVILLE, Ind. – A southwestern Indiana farm linked to a cantaloupe salmonella outbreak that killed two people now has pulled its watermelons from the market after the food-borne illness was found on one of those fruits.

Chamberlain Farm Produce of Owensville says in a statement that it’s cooperating fully with state and federal food safety officials and is unaware of anyone becoming ill from eating any of its watermelons.

An Indiana health department spokeswoman tells the Evansville Courier & Press that the watermelon salmonella strain is different from that found in Chamberlain’s cantaloupes last month.

Federal officials have said the cantaloupe contamination killed two Kentucky residents and sickened 204 people in 22 states.

Grocery chain Schnucks says it removed Chamberlain watermelons from its stores after being contacted by the grower.
