Charter looks to build board

Now that classes are under way at the new Thurgood Marshall Leadership Academy, board President Will Clark said the next meeting will be the last time the founding members gather.

After that, Clark would like to turn the reins over to a newly formed governing board of directors, he said Monday.

“Our next meeting on Sept. 10 could well be the last time we meet as a founding group,” Clark said.

Clark said the new board for the charter school will need an attorney and it would like to have several parents as members, as well. He did not name anyone, but said they plan to let those in the school community know they are looking for board members.

Clark will not be joining on the new board, although several others may choose to do so, he said.

Board meetings have been weekly for most of the year, but since the school is now in full operation, Clark did not think frequent meetings would be necessary for the new board.

In addition to Clark, current members include Sheila Moore, Michael Spath, Jim Burgoon, Jonathan Ray, Alfred Brothers, Bettye Poignard and Dave McComb.

The Fort Wayne Urban League oversees the K-8 charter school, currently just down the street from the Urban League in the former Zion building at 2313 S. Hanna St.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the charter school’s board of directors, call the Urban League at 745-3100.
