Luers narrowly avoids 2nd loss

– Tyrell Johnson’s 50-yard touchdown reception from Quinn Cook with seven seconds remaining gave Bishop Luers a 21-16 come-from-behind victory over Northrop on Friday at Spuller Stadium.

The narrow win allowed Bishop Luers (1-1, 1-1 SAC) to avoid a second consecutive loss to start the season.

The winning score capped a seven-play, 87-yard drive that took 57 seconds.

It came after Northrop (0-2, 0-2) had taken a 17-14 lead on Pedro Hernandez’s 37-yard field goal with 2:39 remaining.

Jaylon Smith had two touchdowns for Luers, scoring on runs of 5 and 9 yards.

SNIDER 56, SOUTH SIDE 25: Brandon Phelps threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the visiting Panthers (2-0, 2-0 SAC) past the Archers (0-2, 0-2).

Phelps connected with Addison Dellinger for 11 and 19 yards, threw a 9-yarder to Quinton Daniels, then ran for a 17-yard score in the third quarter. Donovan Clark had two touchdown passes for the Archers.

HOMESTEAD 63, WARSAW 7: Grayson Bastin scored six touchdowns, including a 95-yard kickoff return to begin the second half, to power the visiting Spartans (2-0) past the Tigers (1-1). Bastin, who had 50 yards rushing, also scored on runs of 1, 7, 15 and 11 yards. He also scored on a 20-yard pass.

CHURUBUSCO 61, CENTRAL NOBLE 6: Of the seven times Jason Nicodemus carried the ball, he scored on four of them to lead the visiting Eagles (2-0, 2-0 NECC) past the Cougars (0-2, 0-2).

Nicodemus, who had 104 rushing yards, scored on runs of 4, 6, 25 and 17, as the Eagles rolled to a 55-6 halftime lead.

BELLMONT 41, SOUTH ADAMS 17: Brad Busse rushed for 223 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Braves’ road victory over the Starfires (1-1). Busse, who also led the Braves with eight tackles, scored on runs of 61, 14, 8 and 84. In all, Bellmont (2-0) rolled up 422 rushing yards.

DEKALB 26, GARRETT 13: Senior quarterback Evan Cochran threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the host Barons (1-1) ended a 22-game losing streak in its win over the Railroaders (1-1).

HERITAGE 40, NORWELL 14: Wil Knapke scored on touchdown runs of 12, 42 and 6, and caught a 37-yard scoring pass from Conner Sheehan in the Patriots’ victory at Norwell (0-2). Heritage (1-1) racked up 537 yards of total offense. Sheehan completed 17 of 21 passes for 309 yards.

ADAMS CENTRAL 26, UNION COUNTY 14: Dalton Combs scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 19 and 16 yards to lead host Adams Central (2-0). The Flying Jets finished with 212 rushing yards.

COLUMBIA CITY 43, WHITKO 13: Adam Neely ran for 218 yards and three touchdowns as the visiting Eagles (1-1) topped the Wildcats (0-2).

LAKELAND 46, FREMONT 13: Fremont (0-2, 0-2 NECC) managed just 130 total yards and visiting Lakeland (2-0, 2-0) had 375 in the Lakers’ NECC win.

EAST NOBLE 48, NORTHRIDGE 7: Nic Weimer completed 13 of 21 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns for the Knights (2-0).

EASTSIDE 41, WEST NOBLE 6: Blake Blaker threw three touchdown passes for the visiting Blazers (1-1, 1-0 NECC) against the Chargers (0-2).

BLUFFTON 26, MANCHESTER 22: D’Wayne Eskridge scored twice and ran for 126 yards for the visiting Tigers (2-0).
