Republicans hardly the party of Christian values

It’s really amazing how easily the Republican Party has been able to hijack the Christian vote. Jesus never said “blessed be the rich and powerful.” But this seems to be the focus of the Republican Party platform.

They are ready to send this country to bankruptcy rather than having the rich pay a fair share. They continue with the myth that the rich won’t create jobs if they have to pay more taxes. They have had a big tax cut for 10 years, but the fewest jobs were created under George W. Bush of any president since records have been kept.

Jesus also said to love your fellow man as he has loved you. But there isn’t a day that goes by without right-wing hate radio or the propaganda machine that is Fox News getting their listeners worked up about some people or groups of people to blame for all the evils in this country.

Also, God gave us this beautiful planet to protect and enjoy, yet whenever a vote comes up to protect the environment, they ridicule and vote against those laws; we know there is no money in clean air and trees that aren’t chopped down.

Apparently God is disgusted with us and told Mother Nature to show us who is boss.

Safety academy decision appropriate in hard times

Hooray! The Public Safety Academy has changed both its direction and its way to pay the mortgage, too. Subsidizing money pits went out when a strained economy, lower property values and loss of good-paying jobs became our new norm.

Maybe we could also apply that kind of thinking when spending the I&M money? Sports programs and other endeavors are for the good ol’ days; not now, when our infrastructure is crumbling, such as streets, occasional sewer backups and power lines disrupted in strong winds.

In a good economy, we can afford to decorate our cake with beautiful frosting, but it’s pretty hard to digest in these trying times.

We can land craft on Mars, but rain knocks out TV

Isn’t technology great? Last Thursday we had a thunderstorm pass through the area. My dish receiver “lost all contact.” It rained.

On the other hand, a vehicle about the size of an average car is sending clear images to Earth from Mars, an average distance of 140 million miles. It doesn’t rain on Mars.

Thanks in order for great Three Rivers Festival

The Three Rivers Festival board of directors, staff and I would like to thank everyone that helped make the 2012 Three Rivers Festival a success. And our grateful “Thank you!” extends to over 400 enthusiastic volunteers, as well as to everyone who participated in or attended any of the TRF’s 80-plus events during those nine hot days.

I feel honored to help lead this festival that has been part of the fabric of Fort Wayne for over 44 years. As we start to plan the 45th, rest assured that the festival board and the staff are working hard to evaluate all current Three Rivers Festival events, and constantly keep our eyes and ears open for new events that will continue to make the Three Rivers Festival Fort Wayne’s premiere festival.
