Officials: Off-duty Chicago cop fatally shoots man

CHICAGO (AP) — Officials say an off-duty Chicago police officer fatally shot a man during an altercation after the officer's motorcycle hit the man's daughter.

Authorities say the officer was driving home around 10 p.m. Saturday when he saw a 4-year-old girl run into the street. He left his bike to avoid a crash but it still grazed the girl.

The girl's father, Christopher Middleton, began yelling at the officer. Village spokesman Larry Shapiro says Middleton was inside a restaurant during the crash.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden says the officer identified himself but the man's behavior continued to escalate. Two others became involved in the fight.

Camden says the officer shot Middleton in self-defense.

The Cook County medical examiner's office says Middleton later died. The 4-year-old was hospitalized for bruises.
