A 23-year-old Kendallville man was found dead Sunday in a Steuben County Jail cell 11 hours after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

A confinement officer found Cody Mosley, 23, unresponsive and not breathing during routine checks about midnight and jail staff then began CPR and called an ambulance, the sheriff’s department said.

Mosley was taken to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital in Angola and was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s department said Mosley had been arrested by Angola police about 1 p.m. Saturday after someone called 911 and reported him as a drunken driver. Mosley then hit a car and then fled the scene of the accident. Police caught up with him and charged with leaving the scene of a property damage crash, operating while intoxicated by drugs and driving while suspended.

Mosley had been cleared at the hospital before being booked in at the jail, which is standard procedure associated with those charges, the statement said.

Confinement officers were checking on Mosley – who was alone in his cell – every hour and he was under video surveillance, Chief Deputy John Gonya said.

An autopsy was performed Sunday, and while the results were inconclusive, there were no signs of foul play. Toxicology reports are pending and it could take one to three week to get results.

Sheriff Tim Troyer requested the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department investigate the death along with Steuben County Coroner Rodney Snyder, which is standard procedure, the statement said.
