With nearly half of the field still on the course, Mitch Rutledge, a day away from his 19th birthday, gave them something to shoot at in the opening day of the Men's City Golf Tournament on Saturday at Pine Valley Country Club.
Rutledge shot an 8-under 63 to take a four-shot lead over defending champion Scott Pieri. Sam Till Jr., Dustan Mohr and Joe Hayden are in a three-way tie for third with 68s.
Rutledge, who finished sixth in last year's tournament, had nine birdies and bogeyed the par-3 13th hole for his round over the 6,649-yard, par-71 course.
"I was just hitting quality shots," Rutledge said. "I was going at pins because they were pretty accessible. I was OK off the tee, but my iron shots were really flush coming in. My putter was really good for the most part.
"When I was five under after the front nine, when I was hitting my wedges really good, that's when I knew I was kind of locked in. I made a few putts.
"It wasn't an ordinary round. I hit the ball like I normally do, but I usually don't shoot 63."
