CHEERS to the gentlemen sitting by us who paid for our breakfast at Bob Evans on Coliseum Boulevard. After seeing our youngest son leave for basic training, we joined our oldest son (who just recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan) to eat. Shortly after the waitress left the bill, she returned to tell us our meal was just paid for. It was a very generous act of kindness that made a difficult morning much better.

CHEERS to the staff at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo on the professional and organized way they handled the June 29 storm. I had just arrived to pick up my 10-year-old son from zoo camp when the storm hit. Parents and children were safely sheltered and constant radio contact was maintained with a supervisor to monitor the situation. It is reassuring to know that children and families are in competent hands. As a local emergency responder, it is also reassuring to know the staff has a plan, and more importantly, they know how to effectively execute it. One more reason the zoo is a great place to visit.

CHEERS to AEP and I&M for restoring power to Crestwood Colony on July 7. We were hit with a freak storm on July 5 and a dead tree fell on power lines, disrupting power to about 75 residents in the addition, including us. What a blessing it was to see numerous crew members tearing away dead limbs and brush and getting lines back up.
JEERS to the homeowners who have dead trees and brush that crowd power lines. This is what caused the outage. You have a responsibility to clear this.

CHEERS to the Huntertown Boys and Girls Little League. What an honor they show all Americans by playing “The Star Spangled Banner” before all evening games. What a sight it is to see everyone stop and stand up with hats removed by all (including the young players) and hands on their hearts. We are the proud grandparents of two players.

CHEERS to all the wonderful staff at the McDonald’s on Scott and Illinois roads. I have an adult daughter with a disability, and we visit at least one time a week. The entire staff calls her by name as they welcome her and help her to get her favorite meal. These folks fill my heart with thanks and joy. They have no idea what their kindness means to moms like me!

CHEERS to my neighbor Max and his grandsons Justin and Brandon along with another neighbor, Kermit. I came home June 29 to two trees downed by the storm in our backyard. By noon on Saturday they showed up with chain saws in hand. By day’s end, branches filled up our front curb and all the trees were cut up into firewood. What would have taken me days, took a half-day with this band of lumberjacks. Everyone should be so lucky to have as fine of neighbors as us.
