Yeison Asencio fell a triple shy of the cycle on Sunday.

He got that triple Monday, along with two other hits in Fort Wayne’s 6-1 victory against Great Lakes in front of 7,687 fans at Parkview Field.

“He’s in the zone,” Fort Wayne manager Jose Valentin said. “Everything he sees, he hits hard. It’s fun to watch.”

Asencio drove in three runs with his triple in the third inning. He singled in the fifth and seventh innings.

“Not only is he getting hits, he’s getting big ones to drive in runs,” Valentin said.

Asencio went 8 for 9 in the final two games of the series. Fort Wayne (22-14, 53-53 overall) swept the three-game series. In the process, the TinCaps reached the overall .500 mark for the first time since they were 1-1.

“It’s big. We haven’t been .500 since the second game of the season,” Valentin said. “It’s been a long time, but I always said ‘I trust my guys. It’s a long season. You just have to go out there and play hard. Anything can happen.’ ”

Asencio wasn’t the only outfielder to continue to produce for Fort Wayne.

Kyle Gaedele had two hits, two RBI and scored one run the same day he was named Midwest League Player of the Week.

“Finding out the news earlier today, I got a lot of text messages and congratulations from family and friends,” Gaedele said. “Coming out here and getting the huge win and completing the sweep, it was a great all-around team effort.”

Gaedele had a .200 batting average at the All-Star break.

With the two hits Monday, his average is up to .251.

“The biggest thing is consistency,” Gaedele said. “Going up there with the same approach every day, not getting too high or too low, just trying to do my job and stay as consistent as I can.”

Austin Hedges also had an RBI double.

It was plenty support for Cody Hebner, who won for the first time since June 11.

“Finally, he was the guy we saw earlier this year. He threw strikes. I could see his confidence on the mound,” Valentin said. “ … He had great command. He was ahead of the hitters most of the time.”

Hebner gave up one run on four hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked two.

“I was down in the zone more than usual and I had a better feel for my secondary stuff,” said Hebner, who improved to 7-5. “I competed better than I usual. I didn’t get down. I had more confidence.”

Relievers Johnny Barbato and Matt Stites combined for three hitless innings. The Loons (16-20, 50-56) didn’t have a hit in the final five innings.

Fort Wayne earned its first three-game home series sweep since April 7-9, 2011, against South Bend.

The team will try to carry the momentum on the road with a four-game series against the Silver Hawks at 1:05 p.m. today.

“We’ve been working at getting to .500,” Hebner said. “Now we have to get above .500.”
