PARR, Ind. (AP) — State officials are investigating what's causing wells to go dry near a small northern Indiana town.

The Journal & Courier reports that the private wells of more than a dozen homes near the Jasper County town of Parr have gone dry in recent weeks, leaving residents with the costly prospect of drilling a new, deeper well.

Staff from the state Department of Natural Resources' Division of Water were scheduled to visit the town that's about 55 miles northwest of Lafayette on Tuesday to evaluate the wells.

Some residents blame the state's lingering drought for their dried-up wells, but others believe a sprawling dairy farm and area farmers who irrigate their fields are lowering the water table and drying up the wells.
