A suspect inside a Fort Wayne apartment surrendered this afternoon two hours after police arrived, shortly after a woman and three children safely left, city police said today.
Dernail I. Brown, 20, of Fort Wayne was taken to the Allen County Jail on an unrelated warrant, city police said in a statement.
No one was injured.
Police said they were called to the 7900 block of Serenity Drive shortly before 10 a.m. regarding a possible barricade and hostage situation. They said they had information that a person wanted for questioning in an ongoing investigation was in the apartment.
The investigation indicated the person might be armed, and might be holding the home's residents against their will, police said. The statement did not say whether either was true.
The police emergency services and crisis response teams were called to assist, the statement said.
Shortly after noon, the woman, two teenagers and a toddler left safely, and the suspect surrendered without incident, police said.
Police and the Allen County prosecutor's office are investigating.
