Woman faces sentence in attempted baby theft

TERRE HAUTE — A western Indiana woman faces up to 30 years in prison if a judge accepts her guilty plea on charges that she stabbed a couple while trying to kidnap their month-old son in what authorities say was a plot to pass off the baby as her own.

A sentencing hearing for 36-year-old Stephanie Foster of Terre Haute was set for today in Vigo Superior Court in Terre Haute.

Foster pleaded guilty May 14 to a felony charge of armed robbery resulting in serious bodily injury in the June 2010 attack. Prosecutors agreed to drop charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery.

Defense attorney Michael Wright had no comment before the hearing.

Authorities say Foster faked a pregnancy and plotted to kidnap a child after she suffered a miscarriage in 2009.
