Indiana forward Christian Watford’s game-winning three-pointer against then-No. 1 Kentucky won an ESPY award Wednesday for Best Play.
Watford’s buzzer-beatiing three helped the Hoosiers knock off their arch-rival Wildcats 73-72 on Dec. 10 at Assembly Hall in front of 17,477 fans. He finished with 20 points against Kentucky, which won a rematch with IU in the NCAA tournament.
Verdell Jones III took an inbound pass, dribbled up the court and then found a trailingWatford, who shot from the left wing. The ball went through the net as time expired, setting off a wild celebration.
“I’m very glad to be representing the university," Watford said in a statement last month. “It was a great moment for me. My teammates did the job of getting me there. Verdell found me with the pass and Cody (Zeller) set a great screen.”
More than 30 awards were being handed out at the Staples Centerin in Los Angeles.
The 20th annual ceremony, hosted by comedian Rob Riggle, honors the top teams and athletes in a variety of sports, capped off by the announcement of the Team of the Year.
