Eifert on Mackey Award watch list

Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert landed on a preseason watch list for the second day in a row.

The Bishop Dwenger graduate is one of 33 players on the John Mackey Award preseason watch list, which was released Tuesday. The award is given annually to the nation's top college tight end.

Also for the second day in a row, Eifert was joined by a teammate on a preseason list. Center Braxston Cave was named to the Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation's top center, watch list.

The 6-foot-6, 251-pound Eifert was a finalist for the Mackey Award last season after he led all tight ends in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 63 receptions and 803 receiving yards.

Eifert, who is also on the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given to the nation's most outstanding player, broke Notre Dame's record for receptions and receiving yards in a season last year.

He was named a first-time All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, a second-team Associated Press All-American and a third-team All-American by Rivals.com and Phil Steele.

The 6-3, 304-pound Cave has played in 35 games in his career, starting 22 in a row before a foot injury cut his 2011 season short.
