Ohio cemetery to house veterans' cremated remains

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The Dayton National Cemetery in southwest Ohio plans to add its first columbarium to hold the cremated remains of veterans or their relatives.

The Dayton Daily News reports the facility will have 2,000 spaces, but officials have yet to finalize other details of its construction.

Cemetery directory Bernard Blizzard says construction could begin early next year. He says the facility on the grounds of the Dayton VA Medical Center should have open spaces for about a decade based on the rate of utilization.

The project's cost will be determined after a contractor is chosen this fall.

The cemetery also maintains more than 44,000 gravesites.
