SCAN names 5 lucky ducks in ’12 charity race

Organizers announced the top five winners of the 23rd annual Weigand Construction Duck Race contest Wednesday.

The winner of the Saturday contest was a ducky named Lynn, who was sponsored by Tod Kitchen of Lima, Ohio. Lynn was one of more than 18,000 plastic ducks to compete in the race to Benefit SCAN.

Cindy Ruchgy of Portland won second place in the race and Bud Hobbs of Fort Wayne won third and fifth place, according to organizers. Bob Hatfield, also of Fort Wayne, had the fourth-fastest duck.

The remaining sponsors of winning ducks will be announced in the coming days following confirmation of eligibility criteria set by Indiana gaming laws, according to organizers.

In total, $164,443 was raised in this year’s duck race to support child-abuse prevention programs in 19 northeast and north-central Indiana counties.

In addition to sales of duck sponsorships, this year 117 businesses or individuals supported the race by purchasing Duck Dignitary sponsorships of $250 or more.
