Heat advisory

The National Weather Service says a heat advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. EDT to 8 p.m. EDT today for the Indiana counties of Elkhart, LaPorte, LaGrange, St. Joseph and Steuben.

Record-breaking heat is expected today. A torrid upper-level high pressure over the Plains will expand eastward into the Great Lakes and bring the hottest weather since 1988. High temperatures today will warm into the lower to mid-100s. Air temperatures and heat index values exceed 100 degrees today.

Very hot temperatures will affect outdoor activities. Record or near-record high temperatures are possible.

People should take extra precautions if they work or spend time outside. Reschedule strenous activities to the early morning or late evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
